The painting, a work on a finished and perhaps "unfinished" panel,
remains shrouded in mystery as far as the dating, origin and destination are concerned.
It is remembered for the first time in an inventory of the Gonzaga house
of 1627 as "a painting depicting the head of a disheveled woman, sketched, by Leonardo da Vinci.
